Keilan00's Introduction
January, 2005
According to every single weight chart Ive ever seen in my entire life, Ive always been in the healthy normal range. My body somehow camouflages weight and at 54 and 135lbs, I can pass as slim. Physically, I look like I weigh 120 lbs. Exercise hasnt necessarily been a priority since I look fine. Looks can be deceiving though.
I had my yearly checkup and my doctor was a little surprised by my results. My heartrate is erratic. My blood pressure is borderline high. My cholesterol/triglycerides are borderline high. I also feel lethargic and uneasy all the time. A twenty-something year old shouldnt be experiencing these types of things.
Im the master of procrastination and excuses when it comes to exercise. I really need to change this mindset and replace them with healthy habits. I need to appreciate the health aspects of exercise instead of thinking exercise is just a means of losing weight.
Im well versed in proper nutrition and quite knowledgeable in exercise and fitness. Ive earned an A+ in my upper division nutrition classes at a highly acclaimed university. Ive coached a male with 10% body fat and helped him achieve 6% body fat. My problem has been putting this knowledge into personal use.
I saw this in an article and I can totally relate 100%.
You begin an exercise program, and attend regularly and faithfully for several months. You start to see results: improved muscle tone, fewer aches and pains, more energy and stamina. But something comes up, life gets busy. You miss one week, then another, Oh well, you think, I can always get back into it whenever I want. There's too much going on right now.
You know maintaining good health requires regular physical activity, month after month, year after year, and that you can't accumulate fitness dividends in a bank. Starting in again tomorrow is better than not starting at all, but for many people, tomorrow is a long time coming. Some people spend more time procrastinating than they do exercising. Procrastination can keep you from addressing many important health issues - from your exercise program, to changing the way you eat, to quitting smoking. I'll do it later gives you the false reassurance it will get done, so you can temporarily put the onerous task out of your mind.
Over the course of the year, I will combine CONSISTENT exercise with healthy eating. Instead of dreaming and hoping, Im actually going to do what it takes to become fit inside and out. Historically, Im commitment phobic in all aspects of my life. Its going to be hard but Im going to try to change this mindset and make a commitment to myself to try my best. Also, Im going to blow my doctors socks off at my next yearly exam.
If youd like to see how Im progressing, I will soon create a thread in the Challenges and Check-in Forum. Instead of quarterly updates, you will be able to see what Im doing in real-time.
Keilan00's check-in thread
I have a large collection of exercise dvds which include weight training, cardio, spinning, yoga, pilates, stability ball, latin dance, and ballet. You name it, I probably have it.
I hope you join me! =)
