I was an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army when my son was born so
being in shape and losing all that "baby weight" was a must for my
career. It wasn't as easy as people would like to believe because where
I was stationed it wasn't mandatory that we do physical training on a
regular basis. After my son was born I was able to get back into the
gym because my husband was there to keep our child...I didn't see the
weight leaving (I thought) quick enough so I joined an Army tem miler
team just for "fun". We had to meet at 4:00am in the mornings to run
from our base in Virginia to the Washington monument, the Lincoln
memorial, and even the White House....(The White House was ten miles) my
goal was to run it in 90 minutes....I ran it in 95 minutes. But of
course once the run was over I fell into the same routine....not
exercising.
Shortly thereafter my husband and I were separated and I
couldn't get out there and run. I tried to go on the weekends and get a
babysitter for my aerobics classes but being a single parent, the
babysitter fees were too much and then the energy level was too little
and I felt guilty about leaving my son with a sitter just so I could go
work out. I then discovered videos. I could put my son in bed or let
him play in his room and I could get my workout on. I found them to be
very effective. I get different videos so that I won't get bored. I try
to stay away from the "firm this part up in ten days" type videos and go
for the aerobic videos that last at least 30 minutes so that I can
really get a good workout and so far it has worked. I just had a weigh
in and pt test and I passed them both.
It really does take some pushing to get into the habit of doing it but I
call my girlfriend who is also a single parent and we put on the speaker
phones and we exercise together. We have incorporated it into our t.v.
so before Ally McBeal on Mondays we start and we actually look forward
to doing this. Our goal is to look good enough to get into a bathing
suit this summer...If we can then we have agreed to take all the kids to
the beach this summer so they cooperate with us as well.
